Early Post-Secondary Opportunities (EPSOs)

EPSOs. TN Department of Education.  AP - Advanced Placement.  Description: College-level high school courses offered in multiple subjects;  Nationally recognized exams.  Structure: Course and Exam.  Provider: The College Board.  Student Fees and Assistance: Exam fees. College Board and state assistance for low-income students.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: AP courses meet graduation requirements and/or elective.  High School Recognition State Policies: Qualifies for graduation with state distinction Qualifies for GPA weighting.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Score on AP exam.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Determined by postsecondary institutions. Awarded upon matriculation.   CIE - Cambridge International Examinations.  Description: High school academic programs. Internationally recognized exams.  Structure: Course and Exam.  Provider: Cambridge International Examinations.  Student Fees and Assistance: Exam fees. State assistance for low-income students.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: Cambridge courses meet graduation requirements and/or elective credit.  High School Recognition State Policies: Qualifies for graduation with state distinction. Qualifies for GPA weighting.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Grade in Cambridge AS or A level subject.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Determined by postsecondary institutions. Awarded upon matriculation.   CLEP - College Level Exam Program. Description: Nationally recognized exams used to assess college-level knowledge. Exams offered in multiple subjects.  Structure: Exam.  Provider: The College Board.  Student Fees and Assistance: Exam fees.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: CLEP is not a course and does not meet high school graduation requirements.  High School Recognition State Policies: CLEP is not a course and does not meet high school graduation requirements.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Score on CLEP exam.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Determined by postsecondary institutions. Awarded upon matriculation.   DE - Dual Enrollment.  Description: Postsecondary (PS) course taught at the PS institution, high school, or online. Student enrolled in the PS institution.  Structure: Course.  Provider: Individual TN PS Institutions.  Student Fees and Assistance: Course tuition, fees, and books. Dual Enrollment Grant (a lottery scholarship).  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: District sets policy on awarding high school credit and graduation requirements.  High School Recognition State Policies: Qualifies for graduation with state distinction.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Dual enrollment course completion. Passing grade as assigned by PS instructor.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Credit awarded on PS transcript upon course completion. Credit can be transferred to other PS institutions.   IB - International Baccalaureate.  Description: Academically challenging course of study offered at the high school level. Internationally recognized exams.  Structure: Course and Exam.  Provider: International Baccalaureate Organization.  Student Fees and Assistance: Exam fees. State assistance for low-income students.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: IB courses meet graduation requirements and/or elective.  High School Recognition State Policies: Qualifies for graduation with state distinction. Qualifies for GPA weighting.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Score on IB SL or HL exam.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Determined by postsecondary institutions. Awarded upon matriculation.   LDC - Local Dual Credit. Description: High school course aligned to standards at local postsecondary (PS) institution. Optional exam for credit at local PS institution.  Structure: Course and Exam.  Provider: Individual TN PS Institutions.  Student Fees and Assistance: Exam fees.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: LDC course fulfills the same requirements as aligned high school course.  High School Recognition State Policies: None listed.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Score on challenge exam at or above the established cut score.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Credit accepted at the partnering PS institution. Students should notify registrar upon. matriculation.   SDC - Statewide Dual Credit.  Description: High school course aligned to statewide postsecondary (PS) standards. Required challenge exam for PS credit at TN institutions.  Structure: Course and Exam.  Provider: Tennessee Department of Education.  Student Fees and Assistance: No cost to students.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: SDC course fulfills the same requirements as aligned high school course.  High School Recognition State Policies: Qualifies for GPA weighting.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Score on challenge exam at or above the established cut score.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Credit accepted at all TN PS institutions. Students should notify registrar upon matriculation.   IC - Industry Certification.  Description: Assessment by an independent certifying entity based on standards for knowledge skills, and competencies.  Structure: Exam.  Provider: Industry.  Student Fees and Assistance: Exam fees.  High School Credit and Graduation Requirements: IC is a program of study and does not meet graduation requirements.  High School Recognition State Policies: Qualifies for graduation with state distinction.  Postsecondary Credit Determinant: Score on industry certification exam.  Postsecondary Credit Awarded: Determined by postsecondary institutions.

The goal of PCSS is to have every student to graduate with at least one EPSOs to enhance their opportunities for Post-Secondary.
