Farm to School

Parents and Community members frequently ask about our Farm to School Program. We have several opportunities throughout the school year to purchase local food. We are funded by the USDA, and strongly encouraged to purchase local foods when possible.

Currently we work with local farmers to make small purchases of seasonal produce including: Watermelon, Strawberries, Broccoli, Corn, Tomatoes, Cucumbers, Plums, Peaches, Apples, and Mushrooms. Our large produce distributor sends us a list monthly of the produce which is grown locally and can be made available to you upon request. September is Farm to School Month, and for School Year 2016-17 all schools participated in the Southeast Crunch, when students were offered an IPM Apple from White County mid-day, as celebration.

This year we are piloting at our high schools the purchase of local produce through the food hub Nashville Grown, which buys from farmers all across Middle Tennessee. Additionally, we now offer local Goolsby Sausage and Sausage Gravy at breakfast. And keep your eye out for our Harvest of the Month, which is the featured local vegetable or fruit!

We wish to continue expanding our Farm to School Program to more farms and more product variety and availability. If you are a local farmer interested in our program, please contact the School Nutrition Team at (931) 528-1847, for participation requirements and further information.
