Seven PCSS Schools Recognized for Achievement and Growth
Algood Middle, Burks Elementary, Capshaw Elementary, Cookeville High, Northeast Elementary, Park View Elementary, and Prescott South Elementary named Reward Schools
PUTNAM COUNTY, TENN. - The Tennessee Department of Education has recognized seven Putnam County Schools with “Reward School” status.
Algood Middle, Burks Elementary, Capshaw, Cookeville High, Northeast Elementary, Park View Elementary, and Prescott South Elementary were named Reward Schools for the 2023-2024 school year by demonstrating high levels of performance or improvement in performance by meeting their annual measurable objectives across performance indicators and student groups.
The seven schools are the most Putnam County has ever had in a single school year.
“We are extremely proud of the students, faculty, and staff at the reward schools,” Putnam County School System Director of Schools Corby King stated. “Being named a reward school by the Department of Education recognizes those schools' daily hard work and dedication to student growth and achievement. All PCSS schools are committed to providing a high-quality education for all students every day, and these schools are among the best across the state of Tennessee.”
Across the state, 377 schools spanning 97 districts received the Reward School designation by the TDOE for having an overall federal accountability score greater than or equal to 3.1 out of 4.0. The Reward School designation is the highest distinction a school can earn by scoring in the top 5 percent in the state.
“I am thrilled to highlight the 2023-24 Reward Schools and Exemplary Districts for their dedication to fostering student learning and growth in their classrooms across the state,” said Lizzette Reynolds, Commissioner of Education. “This annual recognition is the result of our teachers, along with school and district leaders, who are committed to daily student success. I commend each of you for your valiant efforts in supporting the achievement of our Tennessee students.”
The principals at all seven PCSS Reward Schools are happy and proud to earn the distinction.
“The entire Northeast community is honored to receive this recognition,” said Northeast Principal Dr. Melissa Palk. “We are extremely proud of our students for their continued growth and learning!”
“This accomplishment is a direct result of the county personnel and faculty's dedication, hard work, and commitment to student success,” said PSES Principal Dr. Catherine Jones. “We can not succeed without the students and families supporting the teacher's efforts. We appreciate the incredible impact made last year, and we are thrilled for this well-deserved recognition for all involved.”
“Our first-time designation as a Reward School is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Cookeville High Principal Karen Trentham. “This achievement reflects the high standards that we have set and our commitment to excellence. I couldn’t be prouder to see our efforts recognized this way.”
“The Park View faculty, staff, and students have worked unbelievably hard to obtain the reward school distinction,” said PVES Principal Dr. Mel Presley. “We are so excited, proud, and prepared to repeat it next year! Let's go, Rockets!”
“I am so proud of our dedicated and hard-working faculty, staff, and, of course, our amazing students,” said Capshaw Principal Renee Cantrell. “This recognition is a testament to the countless hours and efforts that our CES team puts into every single day. Their commitment to excellence is evident in the growth and achievements of our students. It fills me with great pride to lead such a passionate group of individuals.”

It represents the power of high expectations, collaboration, and perseverance in achieving academic excellence and equity,” said Algood Middle School Principal Rusty Darley. “This honor is not just a celebration of past successes but a commitment to continuously inspire and empower every learner to reach their full potential.”
“I am incredibly proud of our students, faculty, and staff,” said Burks Principal Heather Tinch. “Their dedication and hard work have truly paid off, and receiving this honor reflects that commitment.
