PUTNAM COUNTY, TENN. – The Putnam County School System is pleased to announce Mrs. Bree Wheeler as the new principal at Monterey High School. 

Mrs. Wheeler brings 27 years of experience in the Putnam County School System to Monterey High School. She was a special education teacher and a media specialist at Prescott Middle School for twenty-four years before becoming an assistant principal at Upperman High School, where she has spent the last three years. She is replacing Mrs. Sonja Farley, who is transferring to the work-based learning coordinator position at Monterey High School for 2023-2024. 

“Mrs. Wheeler demonstrates that she seeks what is best for students and strives to provide opportunities for their success beyond the classroom,” said PCSS Director Corby King. “She is a strong supporter, motivator, and curriculum leader for teachers. I am excited to support Mrs. Wheeler as she becomes part of the MHS community.”

A native of Cookeville, Tenn., Mrs. Wheeler’s academic background includes a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education from TTU and a Master’s in Administration also from TTU. She holds endorsements in Modified Special Education, Comprehensive Special Education, Library Science, and Adminstration. 

“I am both humbled and honored to be named principal of Monterey High School,” states Mrs. Wheeler. “I know that I have big shoes to fill, and I am up for the challenge. I am very eager to become familiar with the community of our school and the city of Monterey. I believe that building partnerships is a key to success. It’s important that the students of Monterey have the best experience. You only attend high school once.” 

Upon transferring to her new role, Mrs. Sonja Farley states, “I have loved my experiences with the Putnam County School system. From teaching to administration, I have gotten to work with some great people over the years. It is time for a change but I am not ready to retire and leave my kids behind. I am grateful for the opportunity to get back to working with the Monterey students and parents on a personal level and continue the wonderful work that Mrs. Riddle has been doing with the WBL program. I love my community and want each student to see success in their hopes and dreams in a bright future. I want them to know they can do anything and make a difference.”

Director King also announced today that Mrs. Jackie Vester, who has been serving as interim CTE Supervisor since January, is officially transferring into the CTE Supervisor role. 

“During her tenure as interim supervisor, Ms. Vester has proven that she has the background knowledge, foresight, and leadership skills necessary to continue leading our CTE program,” said King. “With Mrs. Vester’s leadership, we are excited to strengthen community partnerships that provide students with opportunities for work-based learning experiences and real-world job connections. Job exploration is important for the success of our students and our community. We offer multiple pathways and opportunities for students to discover their passion and develop necessary skills to grow and thrive as adults.”
