CIPA, COPPA, and FERPA

Laws exist to keep children safe online. The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was passed in 2001, the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA)  has been around since 1998, and The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) has been around since 1974. Click an icon below to learn more.

  • The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) is legislation that was passed by Congress in 2001. It defines harmful and inappropriate use of Internet resources by students and provides minimum guidelines for schools to follow in protecting students while they are online.  For additional information, visit the FCC Website for the Children's Internet Protection Act

  • The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) is legislation that was passed by Congress in 1998.  It imposes certain requirements on operators of websites or online services directed at children under 13 years of age, and on operators of other websites or online services that have actual knowledge that they are collecting personal information online from a child under 13 years of age.  For additional information, visit the  FTC Website for the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act

  • The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) is a federal law that protects the privacy of student education records and grants parents and eligible students the right to access and amend these records. It applies to all public and private schools that receive federal funding and requires written consent for the disclosure of personally identifiable information from education records. Learn more about the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) at studentprivacy.ed.gov
