King, Gillies, Wilson earn TSSAA Recognition
Congratulations to our very own PCSS Superintendent Corby King and Cookeville High Girls Basketball Coach Jamie Gillies for being honored by the TSSAA today. Mr. King was recognized for being the Middle Grand Division Athletic District School System Administrator of the Year, while Coach Gillies was recognized as the Middle Grand Division Athletic District Female Coach of the Year. Putnam County's own Matt Wilson was also honored as the Contributor of the Year for his generosity and support of Upperman High School and its extracurricular activities.
School System Administrator of the Year: Corby King
Mr. Corby King has been a steadfast advocate for athletics across the district, consistently promoting values of equality, hard work, and sportsmanship. Under his leadership, multiple state championships have been achieved, showcasing his ability to guide both coaches and athletes toward excellence. He has fostered an environment where athletes, coaches, and families alike are supported and encouraged to strive for their best. Additionally, his dedication to the sport extended beyond coaching, as he served as a TSSAA Official for several years, furthering his commitment to the growth and integrity of athletics in the district.
Female Coach of the Year: Jamie Gillies
Jamie has been the head coach for Cookeville High School girls’ basketball team for 8 years. As a coach, Jamie leads by example, consistently setting high standards for her athletes and students, not just in performance, but in character, discipline, and teamwork. She fosters a culture of respect and accountability, teaching her players the value of hard work, sportsmanship, and resilience. Her teams reflect her leadership through their unity, drive, and respect for the game. Off the court, Coach Gillies is a cornerstone of the Cookeville community. Whether she’s volunteering at local events, mentoring students, or advocating for youth development, she leads with humility and purpose. She does the right thing, even when no one is watching—a principle she instills in every young person she mentors.
Contributor of the Year: Matt Wilson
Matt has provided assistance for numerous Upperman athletic fields (football, baseball, softball) renovations, maintenance, and equipment use. He is a major contributor to Upperman High School basketball trips, baseball jerseys, football sponsorships, volleyball fundraisers, dance and cheer events, and band donations. He has helped with renovation of the volleyball and girls’ basketball locker rooms. Matt has helped bring sporting events to the Baxter community through his many connections. He is a positive supporter of any school or community group and is always available to help in any way he can.
