PUTNAM COUNTY, TENN. – When the Tennessee Department of Education released the 2023-24 Tennessee Comprehensive Assessment Program (TCAP) results, educators in Putnam County had cause to smile.
The PCSS and school-level results, which include both fall 2023 end-of-course (EOC) exams and spring 2024 exams in English language arts (ELA), mathematics, science, and social studies, showed growth and improvement.
“Looking at this year’s data, we know it certainly reflects the hard work and dedication of our students, teachers, staff, and administrators. It is a testament to our commitment to excellence and continuous improvement in Putnam County,” said Dr. Chris Winningham, 5-12 Curriculum Supervisor. “We are proud that our data not only reflects our achievements but also guides our continuous improvement efforts. This also goes to show that alignment across our district is crucial for ensuring consistent and high-quality education for all students, which strengthens our ability to support every student in reaching their full potential.”
The current results indicate an increase in student proficiency in most assessment areas from previous years. In addition, PCSS continues to surpass state averages in almost every assessed category.
In math for grades 3-8, PCSS saw an overall increase from 2023. Students moved from 44.6 percent meeting or exceeding expectations in 2023 to 48.6 percent in 2024.
There was an overall increase in science for grades 3-8 from 2023, with students moving from 42.8 percent in 2023 to 44.2 percent in 2024.
In social studies, PCSS showed an overall increase in grades 3-8. Students improved from 36.4 in 2023 to 40.7 percent in 2024.
PCSS also displayed encouraging results with 2024 EOC assessment data. Showing increases from 2023 percentages meeting or exceeding expectations were students going from 51.7 percent in Biology to 52.8 percent, from 33.8 percent in English 1 to 35 percent, and from 56.2 percent in English II to 58.9 percent in 2024.
These scores come on the heels of the Spring 2024 3rd and 4th Grade TCAP ELA scores, which indicated a 3.1 percent increase from last year, with 46 percent of 3rd graders demonstrating proficiency on the ELA portion of the TCAP assessment. PCSS also showed growth in 4th grade, with a 5.0 percent increase from last year, with 49.7 percent of 4th graders demonstrating proficiency on their ELA portion of TCAP.
“I am thrilled to see this kind of positive growth in achievement again this year for Putnam County students,” said Dr. Diana Wood, K-4 Curriculum Supervisor. “These outcomes are a direct result of the hard work and dedication of our leaders, teachers, and students, and it certainly is evidence that the future is bright for Putnam County. We will continue to work hard to ensure high-quality experiences for our students.”
The state has a free TCAP Parent Portal for families of students who participated in the Spring 2024 TCAP. Parents can view their child's scores through the portal. Results will be available for grades 3-8 on July 12, and high school EOC scores will be available on July 15 (with the exception of EOC math subjects, which will be released in September 2024).
