PUTNAM COUNTY, TENN. – In just its second year of existence, the Putnam County CTE Audio/Visual Production/Broadcasting program at Upperman High School is already being recognized on a national level. According to Mascot Media, the UHS AVP team is one of nine national finalists for the Best School-Run Broadcast Team award. Upperman is the only school in Tennessee among the finalists.
“I am so proud of my students,” said video production teacher Susie Dobbs. “ We started without equipment or computers and now have a full studio where the kids do morning announcements. I couldn't be more proud of them and all they have accomplished in such a short time.”
In addition to the AVP team up for an award, Upperman students Caleb McAdam and Riley Vinson are both finalists for Mascot Media’s Broadcast Production MVP award.
“I am ecstatic!” exclaimed Dobbs about the national recognition. “The kids are so talented and creative and they deserve to be recognized for their talents.”
Upperman’s AVP team has displayed their creative talents by recreating Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory favorite scene, doing podcasts with teachers and students along with daily announcements. The team is also in the process of completing a short film for a competition in California.
“We are also planning on moving to live broadcasting soon,” said Dobbs. “The kids will also be competing more in student film festivals next year. We are always looking forward to our video production of Mayday and Upperman Graduation.”
The winners of the Mascot Media broadcasting awards will be determined by a national vote which ends on Friday, April 21. Regardless of the outcome, Dobbs says she is proud of the progress her students are making.
“The parents were so amazed at the professional quality that the Mayday and Graduation videos had last year,” said Dobbs. “The kids have been amazing to work with from the first day of this program. I am blessed to be on this journey with them all.”
This is the third year Mascot Media has recognized the best high school broadcasting programs across the United States. Located in Fayetteville, Arkansas, Mascot Media states on its website that it wants “to connect communities across the country to their favorite high school athletics program.”
